What are some good books about Spanish or Hispanic people and/or written by Spanish-speaking authors?

I'm at the point in my Spanish education in which I want to get a feeling for Spanish or Latin American culture. I believe that literature is a great way to explore cultural ideas, so this summer I hope to delve into some Spanish literature. I'm very good at Spanish, but depending on the book I'd still probably read it in English so that I can get the most out of it (I'm taking a Spanish literature course in Spanish next year anyway). I know of Mrquez, so I'll probably read "One Hundred Years of Solitude". I've read "In the Time of the Butterflies" by Julia Alvarez (written in English), but I think I was too young to fully understand it. I may go back and re-read it. Any other suggestions?
